Is health insurance required by law?

It is subject to where you live. Federal law states there is no penalty for not having health insurance. However, residents in the states of New Jersey, Vermont, California, Rhode Island, Massachusetts and the District of Columbia (Washington, D.C.) are subject to a tax penalty for not having ACA-compliant health insurance.
